The importance of pacing in serialized fiction

After writing 300+ chapters across multiple serials, here's my framework for pacing: Micro-pacing (within chapters): Every chapter needs a mini-arc. Question at the start, escalation in the middle, partial answer at the end that raises a NEW question. Macro-pacing (across arcs): I use 20-chapter arcs. Chapters 1-5 setup, 6-15 rising action, 16-18 climax, 19-20 resolution + next arc hook. Mega-pacing (the full story): Plant seeds 50+ chapters in advance. Readers LOVE when something from chapter 20 pays off in chapter 120.

The 20-chapter arc framework is exactly what I use. Works perfectly for LitRPG too — each arc is like a dungeon or quest.

That mega-pacing point about 50+ chapter payoffs is what separates good serials from great ones. One Piece does this masterfully.

Saving this post forever. The micro-pacing advice especially — I've been ending chapters flat and this explains why my retention dips.
